People are less active nowadays, partially due to technological advancements that have made our lives easier. We pass the time in front of a television or computer screen. Work, housework, shopping, and other essential activities are significantly less tiring than they were for prior generations. We don’t move about as much as we used to and burn off less energy. According to studies, many Americans spend more than 7 hours a day sitting down, whether at work, on public transportation, or in their spare time. This lifestyle has several adverse outcomes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people realized the importance of healthcare and fitness and became more concerned about their mental and physical well-being.
Finding the opportunity to educate people in the devastating times of pandemic, Carly and Maddie came to the limelight through their fitness videos and workout sessions under the label of Built by Biron. They provided free fitness classes, and the audiences went crazy over their easy-to-follow and uncomplicated workout routines. It served as a ray of hope for people who couldn’t access gyms or exercise equipment due to the lockdown. Built by Biron received a remarkable response, and the sisters put their all into expanding the business.
Carly and Maddie Biron spent their lives in Framingham, MA. They both attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and graduated with a degree in Kinesiology (exercise science). Both sisters were Division 1 swimmers and made multiple records. Being athletes, they were well aware of the role of fitness in one’s life. They also experienced various injuries that helped them understand how to overcome pain and recover from injuries through a fitness routine. The experience and knowledge they gained from life were a great motivation behind the business.
Being young and new to the business world, The Biron sisters didn’t know much about starting or running a business when they started, but they learned quickly. They believe that diving straight in is the best way to learn. After three months of creating class formats and teaching for free, they started charging a small fee per class and didn’t lose anyone with this change. They had hundreds of videos in only a couple of months and compiled them onto an on-demand platform. People could subscribe to this platform monthly and do the workouts on their own time. As the winter approached, the sisters found a space in Framingham to record their classes going. When the pandemic started to evolve, and things became safer, they also started offering personal training in January 2021.
Carly and Maddie also run a podcast, Eat the Damn Cake, that covers fitness-related topics in a fun way and helps Built by Biron thrive under the tremendous efforts and passion of the sisters.
