Time and time again we stumble across motivational phrases emphasizing that actions speak louder than words, or that actions speak the language of your personality. Needless to say, these golden words state nothing but the truth.

A successful career is similar to an award-winning recipe. However, in this case, the star ingredient is no exotic ingredient but one’s personality. There are a plethora of good qualities that create a winning combination.

As far as ingredients go, when successful careers are examined, certain personality traits show up again and again. Personality traits are an individual’s own distinguishing qualities or characteristics. These personality traits combine together to create actions, and these actions either lead to success or failure.

So what personality traits do successful people possess?

Challenging situations give a new perspective altogether on life’s limitations, inspiring people to strive for heights they would never have dreamed of reaching. People who are navigating the difficult journey of learning and growing sometimes end up defeating all the odds and reaching the zenith of success. Integrity

Integrity remains the top quality required for leadership and success in business. It is defined as the quality of being honest and having unshakable moral principles, situated at the intersection of consistent actions and strong values. 

In retrospect, popularity, fame, and money are temporary. They come and go, but integrity and honesty remain. Building a reputation of integrity is what changes, saves, and transforms your life for the better forever.  Contrary to popular notions, success is not measurable in money or possessions; wealth does not equate to success/victory. And always remember there can be no success without integrity. 

Keep your word no matter the circumstances, even if doing the right thing will cost you dearly. Sticking by morals and belief systems holds utmost importance for me. It’s important not just to talk the talk but also walk the walk of what we say we’re going to accomplish together. 

Time management

As a personality trait, time management self-discipline enables you to funnel your energy towards a specific goal. You are not distracted by any short-term gain, but rather, you have the resolve to continue working towards your long-term objective. In simple words, if one can manage time, one can master anything. My secret to success is definitely time management.

Time management holds far more importance than a mere hack. It’s a lifestyle. Managing time well leads to more prospects and less time wasted on trivial matters and pointless debating. Successful people are thriving because they get a lot done in a short span of time. The only way to do that is by making the most out of the allotted 24 hours we all get. Exceptional people value their time and see the direct connection between how they spend their time and energy. 

Planning everything out

Being in the business sphere is like a gamble. It’s either a roaring success or a disappointing loss. So be prepared for both scenarios. Extraordinary people should always be prepared. They not only have a plan B, but also multiple backup plans and strategies to battle surprising crises. I call this the “pivot”, always have a pivot/backup plan. It’s awe-inspiring to read biographies and many times have I read how successful people mentally rehearse and visualize the possibilities vividly so that when the actual situation occurs, their brains will “remember” what to do.

 People who are successful are in control. They know they always have a choice so they never pester in or let guards down when the opponent gets stronger. They don’t feel victimized by their genetics, history, and/or circumstances and they truly believe that the past does not determine the future. They write the script of their lives, and planning things out is their shield.

Detail and process-oriented 

Successful people constantly seek clarity in their lives. They know what they want and they follow their intuition while formulating and executing work plans. Vague desires and random plans lead to vague outcomes. It is this sense of direction that gives them the staying power to stick to their goals and achieve their dreams.

 Having solid processes in place is essential for any successful entrepreneur. In the world of business, a process is a repeatable series of steps that help those working within a business to complete necessary tasks. Processes can apply to various aspects of the business including sales, onboarding of new team members, production, and product fulfillment.

 When business owners have a process-oriented mindset, they are able to work smarter, not harder. Implementing processes in various areas of the business can prevent waste, allowing business owners to scale and grow their businesses. Additionally, when business owners have repeatable processes in place, they are able to easily train new team members to fulfill important aspects of the business without sacrificing time or quality.

 Being Empathetic

Empathy is an essential trait for entrepreneurs. Whether a business owner manages a large team of employees or works directly with their customers as a high-performing solopreneur, they must be able to connect with others on a genuine level.

 Successful entrepreneurs are able to put themselves in others’ shoes, considering the perspectives of their employees and customers as they navigate key business decisions. In business, empathy can look like anticipating your customer’s needs, empowering your team members to take time off to recharge when they need it, and giving both employees and customers space to voice their opinions and concerns.

 Business owners who have the soft skills necessary to connect with others may experience benefits such as increased customer loyalty, more customer referrals, and increased employee productivity.

Bottom line

Your personality shines through during social interactions and defines who you are – not your educational background or physical appearance. Rather than questioning the ‘why’ of any situation, we should focus on how we could emerge from it successfully. Let no roadblocks stop you. The aforementioned traits along with a vision for what you want to accomplish are paramount to your success.
